The Method

UnDoing Yoga Logo (5).png
At the heart of the UnDoing Yoga Method is a deep expression of self, an evolving sense of knowing and a personal power that transcends all misaligned programming. We envision a global yoga practice fuelled by empowerment, where people sit confidently in the pocket of their individualism and allow their actions to be guided by a deep connection to their intentions.
FOUNDATIONAL PHILOSOPHY

  • No cookie-cutters: Release yourself from the shackles of 'correct alignment' and step into what's right for you.

  • Find gold in the journey: Benefits are obtained in the process, far before you've arrived at your destination.

  • You are your own guru: Seek guidance, but never give away your power. You hold the wisdom of the universe.

  • Meet yourself where you're at: Accepting the reality of your present capacity is part of honouring yourself.

  • Practice over performance: Never feel obliged to do anything for the sake of fitting in or appeasing the teacher.

  • Depth is multi-dimensional: There is not one universal definition of depth in yoga asana, you define where the depth is for you.

  • Redefine the comfort zone: Take your comfort zone beyond the physical and explore your mental and emotional ones too.

  • No superior options: There are no 'better' or 'worse' modifications for asana. It all depends on what you want to achieve.

  • No labels: The terms beginner, intermediate and advanced are subjective. Practice for intentions, not labels.

  • Perception shift is half the battle: Everything you do is valuable, worthwhile and beneficial. Never dismiss your efforts.

  • Mindfulness is a choice: Yoga isn't inherently mindful, you are the only one who can choose to practice mindfully.

The intention behind this method is to help you create a customised approach to your practice. Guided by four key pillars which, each in their individual way and as a whole, this method provides you with the support to unpack any limiting conditioning surrounding what you think yoga ‘should’ be and empower you to ultimately align yourself with your deeper needs.
Sustainabilty
SUSTAINABILITY

Think of your practice like a fruit tree; it needs attention, time, energy, insight and love to grow. When you can keep it alive you can watch it flourish.

On the yoga mat:

The reality of yoga in our modern society is that many styles are approached in a manner which provides potential (and often risky!) short-term gains. This approach doesn't generate a sustainable practice nor does it empower you to stick around to deepen your connection to yoga year after year. The UnDoing Yoga Method focuses on the longevity of yoga asana and which adaptations can be made to encourage the development of a nourishing and viable practice over the long run. When you can gain an understanding of how to approach your practice with longevity in mind, you inherently tap into the holistic benefits contained within yoga.

Curiosity
CURIOSITY

Like a child on a playground there is so much variety to explore within your yoga practice. Being curious will bring your inner wisdom out of the wood work.

On the yoga mat:

Your willingness to explore and be curious is the essence of asana. Within your curiosity lies the answers you need for knowing your own personal alignment and correct positioning on any given day. The prevalence of 'universally correct alignment' within yoga asana disconnects you from meeting your own needs. The UnDoing Yoga Method encourages playfulness and personal investigation as a foundation for taking ownership of your practice. This equips you with the knowledge you need to practice intuitively, as you embark on finding the deep wisdom that lies within.

Harmony
HARMONY

Strength and flexibility are both key contributors to a healthy yoga practice. Focusing on both creates a natural path towards movement freedom and optimal physical health.

On the yoga mat:

Despite it's innumerable health benefits yoga has become synonymous with flexibility gains which are most commonly achieved in a forceful manner. This focus can discourage functional strength and overall health. The UnDoing Yoga Method recognises that strength and flexibility have a symbiotic partnership designed to support sustainable, healthy movement and approaches muscle lengthening through internal strength rather than external force . Through establishing a harmonious relationship between strength and flexibility the benefits of yoga asana greatly increase.

Empowerment
EMPOWERMENT

You are the boss of your yoga practice, no one else. Your autonomous actions will confidently guide you towards your personal intentions.

On the yoga mat:

The practice of yoga is an inward journey yet can often take on a performative tone, particularly within a group setting or with the guidance of a teacher. The most foundational aspect to building an empowered yoga practice is identifying what you are looking to gain from your time and energy spent doing yoga and not being overly concerned with what the group is doing or what the teacher might want you to do. The UnDoing Yoga Method recognises there is no right or wrong way, as right and wrong only exist within the context of what you want to achieve.
